Medications
Quick links
There are a number of medication resources available locally and nationally. Most clinics will have a combination of many of the following resources to fill as many medication gaps as possible.
$4 List
The $4 list that is available at Walmart, Bashas and Food City are always a good place to start and carries most first line medications for the most frequently used medications. Unfortunately the $4 list has less and less $4 medications so make sure to double check the price as some are $9 and $15 per month.
If the medication is not on the $4 list we recommend using platforms like GoodRx or Blink Health. With either one you are able to look up the price online prior to prescribing.
GoodRx
For patients to take advantage of GoodRx the provider sends the prescriptions electronically or with a paper script and provide the patient with either a discount card or a coupon online.
Good Pill
Home delivery pharmacy that’s dedicated to providing people with affordable medication, filling prescriptions for anyone whose co-pay or deductibles are too high, or who don’t have insurance at all. Most medications are only $6 for a 90 day supply.
Blink Health
Blink Health has an online platform where the medication is ordered and paid for and the medication is either delivered to the patient’s house or picked up at the pharmacy.
Patient Assistance Programs
If the medication is not available or is cost prohibitive then we suggest filling out a patient assistance program application for the medication needed. Patient assistance programs are offered by the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the medications and the typical approval will cover the medication free for a year. A search can begin with the medication/pharmaceutical company or by going to NeedyMeds which has a more comprehensive list. Click on the patient assistance link and video for more information on how to take advantage of patient assistance programs.
Direct Relief and Americares
Direct relief and Americares are two companies that accept donated medications from pharmaceutical companies and provide them free of charge to safety net clinics. They have a list of available products to choose from every two weeks that often includes expensive medications along with the more commonly used medications in every day practice.
Dispensary of Hope
Dispensary of Hope is similar to Direct Relief and Americares expect there is a $7,500 annual fee and your clinic has a predictable formulary to choose from which includes insulin and new orders can be placed every week.
RxOutreach
RxOutreach is typically used to find specific medications that were not available through the previously mentioned resources. Your clinic will need to become a member (no fee) and order as well as pay for the medication and the medication is shipped to the clinic.
